Hiking With Fido

Colorado’s beautiful scenery is great for hiking. Many of our canine patients love exploring new scenery, and looking for squirrels and chipmunks. If you want to get Fido’s tail going, consider taking him for a hike. The fresh air, sunshine, and exercise will be good for you both. Just be sure to put your pup’s safety first. A local Aurora, CO veterinarian offers some tips on hiking with your dog below.

Preparation

Make sure that Fido is fixed, microchipped, and wearing current ID tags. Your pooch should also be current on his vaccinations and parasite control. It’s also best if your canine pal knows basic obedience commands, like Sit, Stay, and Come

Leashes

Even if Fido is well trained, it’s best to err on the side of caution, and keep him leashed. You can use a retractable leash, but bring a regular one along just in case. Retractable leashes can be dangerous in some areas, such as near steep cliffs or riverbanks.

Hydration

Keeping your dog hydrated is extremely important. Bring plenty of water along, as both you and your pup will need it. You may want to get your pet a collapsible dish, or a doggy water bottle with an attached dispenser. Keep a close eye on Fido, and watch for signs that he’s getting tired. Man’s Best Friend does sometimes push himself to the point of exhaustion. Even if he really wants to see if there’s a squirrel up ahead, stop and give him a drink before you go on. Don’t let your furry buddy drink from rivers, lakes, or streams, though: the water could be contaminated.

Paws

Be sure to keep Fido’s claws trimmed. You  may also want to put paw balm on your pet’s toe beans to protect them.

Endurance

Take care not to overexert your canine buddy! If Fido is a puppy, small dog, senior, or large breed, and/or has health issues, a vigorous hike may be too much for him. If you’re not sure how much activity is safe for your dog, consult your vet.

Waste

Always pick up after your furry best friend! In some places, you may be able to bury your dog’s waste, but you’ll need to check local ordinances first. Bring waste baggies along just in case.
